Firebase Cloud Storage is a handy service of Firebase to store files in the cloud. I use it frequently in various apps. But just yesterday, I received an email from the Firebase team that the terms of the service will be changed.

What are those changes?

  • If you want to add a new bucket to your existing project, you need to be on the Blaze pricing plan. This is effective starting from October 30, 2024.
  • If you want to access your existing buckets in your projects, you need to be on the Blaze pricing plan. This is effective starting from October 1, 2025.

If you don’t act, your apps might not be working anymore after October 1, 2025!

What does that mean?

In short, you just need to change your billing plan from Spark to Blaze in all projects that use Firebase Cloud Storage. Your default bucket still benefits from the free tier which should be sufficient for testing or smaller apps.
